The First Ward School was commissioned on March 20, 1879, by the Neenah City Council, putting $15,600 towards the construction. The name of the school was due to it being built in the First Ward of Neenah. Materials for the school were provided locally, with stone from the Neenah quarry and pressed brick from the Neenah brick yard. Once everything was built and other required components such as a furnace was added, the total cost was $25,000. In 1921, the American Legion asked to have the existing Neenah schools renamed after presidents, and thus the First Ward School was renamed Washington School. In 1976, the original building was razed and the current building built to replace it, serving as an elementary school until 2008. In 2008, the school was then closed for 6 years and reopened in the fall of 2014 for Early Learning and 4 year old kindergarten.
